AB  - It is widely accepted that the overall performance of construction companies is largely affected by the lack of effectiveness of their production planning and control systems. Through the evaluation of such systems, one can identify the origin of existing problems and actions that can improve the performance of production systems. The contributions presented in this article arise from a research project that had as one of its primary goals the development of a production planning and control model for small sized building companies. A set of practices underlying this model was defined in order to evaluate the effectiveness of its implementation. The identification of these practices was based on production management core concepts and principles. An indicator measuring the implementation effectiveness of the model was also proposed. The results indicated that most successful planning and control systems in terms of implementation were those in which short term planning and control was effective and stable.
